Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye Environment Art

Spoilers ahead!

A compilation of environment art I made for Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye! I was honored to be able to work on Outer Wilds, especially for my first professional project. Here are a bunch of my favorite pieces from development. My focus was on making props and damaged architecture, and took on some visual effects responsibilities later in the project, which I made a separate post for!

A lot of these pieces involved collaboration with my awesome coworkers, including:
Environment Art: Eilish Lambrechtsen, Kindra Dantone, Lara Colson, and Emily Blatnicky.
Concept Art: Ian Jacobson
Art Direction: Wesley Martin
Level Design: Alex Beachum and Loan Verneau
Technical Art: Logan Ver Hoef

The Stranger's dam after it breaks! Eilish Lambrechtsen made the base model for the intact dam, which I responsibly demolished!

The broken pieces when the dam bursts. The splintered wooden edges here are cards with 2 UV sets, in order to both blend with the wood grain and control the shape variation of each broken plank. These are just about seamless when put together!

Some props in the dark Dreamworld of the Stranger. The pristine wood in the Dreamworld is distinctly different from the decayed, worn wood material in the Ringworld.

Here is the entire damaged floor kit I built! On the top are the splintered pieces, and on the bottom are rotten pieces.

An example of the worn wood material, with the cable prop kit. The cables are reserved for areas which reveal the inner workings and technology inside the Stranger.

Here I made the screen 'windows', rim, and artificial sun of the Stranger! The solar sails and Stranger exterior were made by Emily Blatnicky.

Last but not least, a small easter egg for my dear cat Comet. :)
